The Mermaid & Pirate
In popular culture, mermaids are widely perceived as female mythical characters, but male counterparts, known as mermen, also exist. This makes the sign peculiar. It’s important to note that women can also be pirates, although less commonly portrayed.
It’s peculiar that women are associated with mythological creatures while men are linked to historical figures. It would have been more inclusive if the intention was to use mythological characters for the bathroom sign, including both mermaids and mermen. Alternatively, depicting both genders as pirates could have been an option.
