Creative Responses to the Only Child Syndrome
As an only child, one may experience certain drawbacks of being alone, but there are also unique advantages to it. However, children tend to desire siblings and ask their parents when they are going to have a new baby. Some parents have come up with inventive responses, like the father in this story.
When his child asked if he would have a brother or sister, the father jokingly responded, “Son, you are an only child and still not the favorite – I don’t think competition is going to help you achieve that.” Although meant to be a joke, the response could have convinced the child that having a sibling may not be necessary after all.
