A High School Student’s Flag Legacy

The iconic flag of the United States, a symbol of national pride and identity, carries a remarkable origin story. Contrary to the perception of its grandeur, it was the brainchild of a 17-year-old high school student named Robert G. Heft. Moreover, the design didn’t initially earn Heft high praise; his teacher awarded it a modest B-grade.

Undeterred by his teacher’s assessment, Heft believed in his creation and sent it to Walter Moeller, his Ohio Congressman. Remarkably, Heft’s design prevailed, becoming the official U.S. flag on July 4, 1960. Although Heft has since passed away, his legacy is a testament to youthful innovation and determination.
