No McDonald’s or Starbucks
Believe it or not, Iceland is one of the few countries where you won’t find any McDonald’s restaurants. While Reykjavik boasts beloved fast-food chains like KFC and Taco Bell, you won’t come across classic items like the Big Mac or Chicken McNuggets in Iceland. This is largely due to the enduring popularity of local burger joints, notably Hambórgarabúllan.
Interestingly, following the 2008 financial crash, the lone McDonald’s restaurant in Reykjavik shuttered its doors. Adding to the unique culinary landscape, Iceland also lacks Starbucks outlets. Depending on your perspective, this absence may be seen as either a downside or a delightful aspect of the Icelandic dining scene.
