One Small War

Iceland has been involved in only one conflict that resembles a war. This incident occurred when Iceland extended its fishing limits from four to twelve nautical miles, which did not sit well with the British fishing fleet.

This dispute led to a series of confrontations between Icelandic fishing vessels and Royal Navy warships tasked with protecting British trawlers. These clashes, marked by boat ramming and gunfire, persisted intermittently for approximately twenty years. In June 1976, the parties reached an agreement to resolve the tensions over regional fishing rights.
