No Pet Reptiles or Amphibians
Keeping lizards, turtles, or snakes as pets in Iceland is not legally permissible. As a result, you won’t encounter any amphibians or reptiles as domestic animals in the country. Authorities enforced this ban in the 1990s after receiving reports of a pet turtle infecting its owners with Salmonella paratyphi B.
Despite the ban, people still trade these animals on Iceland’s black market. Icelandic authorities have considered releasing Leopard geckos and Iguanas into the market to counter illegal trade. These animals possess health clearance certificates, which serve as a deterrent against the illegal pet trade.
