A Dark Past
While Iceland may seem like a utopia in many respects, its history unveils some dark secrets. Similar to North America and certain European countries, Iceland experienced a series of witch hunts between 1654 and 1690.
During these hunts, men constituted the primary targets, with one woman also facing prosecution. The first recorded witch hunt in Iceland occurred in 1625, involving Jon Rognvaldsson. Accused of ghostly harm to horses and children, he darkened the country’s history.
