Cheating Death

In 1954, Hemingway escaped Death again by surviving two plane crashes in two days. He chartered a sightseeing flight over the Belgian Congo as a Christmas present to Mary. On their way to photograph Murchison Falls, the plane struck an abandoned utility pole and “crash landed in heavy brush.” Hemingway sprained his shoulder, and Mary broke two ribs.

The following day, they boarded a second plane to try to seek medical care in Entebbe, and this plane caught fire on the runway. All in all, Hemingway ruptured his liver, spleen, and kidney and also suffered a fractured skull. In one of the crashes, he used his head as a battering ram and headbutted the jammed door open.
