Twenty-Four Hour Party People
For his 60th birthday, Hemingway’s wife, Mary, planned a lavish party that ended up lasting twenty-four hours. She flew in Chinese food from London, codfish from Madrid, and Champagne from Paris for the party and hired equally diverse waitstaff, bartenders, and cooks.
In addition to all this exotic food, there were flamenco dancers, fireworks, and a shooting booth. The star-studded guest list even included Italian royalty and the Maharajah of Cooch Behar, India. Sounds like the kind of party and gathering that even The Great Gatsby would have been impressed by!
