The Muses
There were nine muses in Greek mythology, but Papa only needed five. Each time he got divorced, Hemingway was married again within a year, but he always left a dedication in print.
He dedicated The Sun Also Rises to his first wife, Elizabeth Hadley Richardson; Death in the Afternoon to his second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer; For Whom the Bell Tolls to his third wife, Martha Gellhorn, and Across the River and Into the Trees “To Mary with Love,” although he was in love with Adriana Ivancich at the time.
