Canine Behaviors Decoded

It’s hard not to notice how often and in how many places a dog leaves its mark while out for a walk. When male dogs lift one of their hind legs to do so, many people assume it’s to avoid accidentally soiling themselves.

However, research suggests more to this behavior than meets the eye. By lifting their leg, dogs aim to spread their scent more broadly, effectively communicating their presence to other canines.
