#25: Heavenly matchmaking
In today’s world, it’s hard to imagine basing a marriage decision on a single photo or portrait, but several decades ago, it was a common practice. European royals, in particular, were known for choosing their betrothed based on a single image. While this might seem strange to us now, it was a way to ensure that the couple was compatible in terms of appearance and social standing. This poster’s grandparents had a similar experience, but it was not quite as formal.
Jill shared the story of how her grandparents’ relationship began with a single photograph of her grandmother. Her grandfather’s mother had received the photograph from a friend, and upon seeing it, he made a split-second decision that he wanted to marry her. While it may seem impulsive, it’s clear that his decision was the right one, as they ended up getting married soon after. It’s a testament to the power of attraction and the way that even a single image can spark a connection between two people. While it’s a bit different from how we date today, it’s a reminder that love can happen in many different ways and under many different circumstances.
