Dominic explained that his colleagues had already organized a gathering at a nearby bar and that he didn’t want to disappoint them. He promised Emma he’d only go for a short while, just a drink or two, and then return home. But Emma couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t about being polite. It felt more like a cover story—something planned in advance for reasons he wasn’t ready to admit.
She nodded, trying to seem understanding, but deep down she was angry and suspicious. Dominic’s calm explanation did nothing to reassure her. If anything, it made her more determined. She realized that the party could very well be her best chance to get answers. Whether she liked it or not, she needed help—and she knew exactly who could provide it. With shaky hands and a conflicted heart, Emma reached into her purse and pulled out the card Jennifer had given her.
