Pronouns of Preference
The use of preferred pronouns, which are the pronouns an individual prefers others to use when referring to them, has become increasingly common in today’s society. As people become more aware of gender diversity and inclusivity, more individuals are choosing pronouns that do not necessarily align with their biological sex. Furthermore, there has been a rise in the use of gender-neutral pronouns, which avoid the use of gendered language altogether.
While most people respect and comply with others’ preferred pronouns, some individuals do not embrace the concept. For instance, some individuals view preferred pronouns as a sign of a lack of confidence in oneself. However, this notion is misguided since individuals who use preferred pronouns are confident in their identity and have the courage to express it openly. Ultimately, the use of preferred pronouns is a way for individuals to assert their identities and feel respected and valued by others, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.
