Indeed, “throw another shrimp on the Barbie” is a frequently quoted phrase associated with Australia, along with the classic greeting “g’day mate.” However, it’s worth noting that Australians refer to shrimp as prawns. The saying gained popularity through a series of tourism advertisements in the 1980s featuring Paul Hogan, famously known as Crocodile Dundee.
While some Australians may cringe upon hearing the phrase, often due to Americans misquoting it (as Hogan said, “slip” instead of “throw”), it has nonetheless become ingrained in the American vernacular as a cliché representation of Australian culture.
