Show the Proper Welcoming Gesture

Instead of shaking hands or hugging, Thai people have a traditional and straightforward way of welcoming each other, known as the “Wai” greeting. The Wai can be offered in various ways, replacing other physical gestures of greeting.

To perform a basic Wai, one should place their fingertips together beneath their chin while ensuring their palms meet in a praying gesture. The elbows should be tucked in at the sides. This type of Wai is used when greeting equals or individuals with uncertain status. The level at which you hold your hands during the Wai indicates the respect you show to the other person.
