Truth Is…

The adage “honesty is the best policy” is often touted as a guiding principle in life. However, when it comes to job interviews, is it really applicable? A typical question that candidates are asked is “Why do you want this job?” While it is expected that applicants will provide an answer that is both compelling and impressive, the reality is that most people apply for jobs because they need the income.

One candidate humorously stated that they have “always been passionate about being able to afford food.” Though it is a straightforward and truthful response, it is unlikely that most interviewers would be amused by such an answer. It is unfortunate that candor is not always valued in job interviews, as it could help foster genuine conversations and reveal more about the candidate’s character. Nonetheless, candidates should still strive to provide thoughtful and well-crafted answers that showcase their skills, experience, and interest in the position. Ultimately, the goal is to strike a balance between honesty and professionalism, presenting oneself in the best possible light while still remaining true to one’s values.
