#10: Democracy in Ancient Greece Was… Intense

Americans love talking about democracy — it’s part of our national identity. But democracy looked a little different in Ancient Greece. Citizens had the power to “vote out” a person they disliked by exiling them for ten whole years.

Imagine gathering your neighbors, scribbling a name, and essentially saying, “Yeah, we’re done with you — enjoy a decade somewhere else.” Harsh… but effective. As long as you weren’t the one getting voted off the island.
