#19: A Town That Lives Underground

This fact sounds like a movie plot, but it’s completely real. Coober Pedy, a mining town in Australia, is famous for its underground homes — called “dugouts.” These aren’t apocalypse shelters or quirky tourist attractions; they’re practical, everyday houses designed to escape the brutal heat.

Temperatures in this region can climb so high that underground living is genuinely the most comfortable choice. Inside the dugouts, the earth naturally regulates the temperature, keeping things cool and livable. It’s brilliant engineering… even if the idea of living underground would send some of us running in the opposite direction.
