Abandoned But Not Defeated
Glass’s comrades initially took him along but soon realized that an injured man posed a significant liability, especially when facing enemy Indian warriors. Left with nothing but fur skin, Glass was determined to return to his base and seek revenge. He strapped his broken leg and tended to festering sores that had developed on his body as best as he could. To survive, he foraged for berries and scavenged abandoned carcasses left by wolves.
Gradually, Glass’s wounds healed, and he embarked on a journey back to the army base. There, he reenlisted and was reunited with his supposed friend, Fitzgerald, who had been tasked with looking after him. The only thing that prevented Glass from exacting revenge on Fitzgerald was the fear of facing punishment from the army for killing a fellow soldier. Nonetheless, Glass warned Fitzgerald that his life would be in danger if he ever left the army.
