Upon returning home from the front lines of World War I, Oskar Kokoschka painfully discovered that his long-time lover, Alma Mahler, had married another man. While such a turn of events would have saddened most people and eventually moved on, Oskar’s response was far from ordinary. Unable to accept the loss, he embarked on a rather peculiar path of revenge.
Refusing to let go, Oskar had a life-size doll crafted to resemble Alma Mahler, and he instructed the maker to ensure the doll was as realistic as possible. Once the doll was completed, he engaged in a bizarre and unsettling ritual, posing and painting the doll in various erotic positions. His desire for revenge drove this unusual behavior as he grappled with his feelings of rejection and betrayal.
