Local Hero Turned Vigilante Cop
By 1967, “Bulford the Bull” had become a local hero, taking on the mafia controlling the Moonshine business. His actions drew the ire of the mafia, leading to several assassination attempts. Bulford survived these attempts and even managed to eliminate the hitmen sent to kill him. However, tragedy struck on August 12, 1967, when fate changed his life forever. While responding to a roadside callout with his wife Pauline, occupants in a nearby car opened fire on the couple. Bulford survived, but his wife succumbed to her injuries.
Guilt-ridden over his wife’s death at the hands of criminals, Pusser sought revenge by naming the assassins in open court. Strangely, the four assassins mysteriously died one by one. While rumors swirled, no evidence was ever linked to Pusser, and he was never charged in connection with the killings. Was it retributive justice or fate that intervened in his quest for vengeance?
