Unconventional Math Methods
It may sound unusual, but there’s a belief that some Turkish people approach math differently. According to one blogger, there’s a tendency among many Turks to feel apprehensive about using math.
In certain areas, people employ a unique method of subtraction by addition. For instance, if you intend to buy a pound of tomatoes priced at 3 lira and hand over a 10 lira bill, you might receive 2 lira first because ‘it’s five now,’ followed by the remaining 5 lira. In this way, subtracting 10 – 3 is simplified to 2 + 3, which equals five and is easier to deduct from the original 10 lira.”
