The Struggles of Harlem – 1970s 

In many ways, the 1970s represented one of the most challenging periods in Harlem’s history. Despite millions of dollars invested in a ten-year plan to revitalize the neighborhood, more progress was needed. 

Issues such as poverty, substance abuse, crime, and poor education plagued the area, causing it to suffer immensely. Although Harlem continues to face challenges today, significant improvements have been made since those dark days.
