Spooky Halloween – the 1940s

The Halloween celebrations we know today often feature children dressed as their favorite superheroes or cartoon characters, but in the early 1900s, Halloween was intended to be a genuinely frightening event.

This photo from the 1940s showcases a child dressed as a terrifying clown, a costume that would have undoubtedly won the scariest award at any Halloween party. It was customary back then to have a photo shoot to commemorate the eerie ensemble chosen for All Hallows’ Eve, creating a lasting memory of the spine-chilling festivities.
